The Lab Program
The Lab program is a year-long program designed to equip students with real life skills, and to facilitate gainful employment of students once they have completed their studies.
The program consists of core modules, fundamental skills and a 1-2 week internship in the industry. Registered with the SAQA as a Level 4 Further Eduaction and Training Certificate in Advertising, the program is structured in line with current educational trends, integrating theoretical training and intensive practical application.
At Lab the focus is on personal exploration and creative experimentation. Learners investigate and document the processes and methodologies of a variety of creative thinkers. They are exposed to real world learning through an internship programme that is supported by agencies such as TBWA Hunt Lascaris, FCB and Old Shanghai as well as Primedia Unlimited.
Program Modules
Students are given insight into the advertising/brand communications industry, through exposure to the functions of each department and the inter-relationships between the industry, the media, clients and suppliers. Guest lecturers from leading agencies guide students through a direct transfer of skills.
Computer literacy is integral to the course, with exposure to the workings of both Apple Macs and PCs. Students are taught how to use programmes such as Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign, and are provided with the skills to both conceptualise and design.
Students explore the process behind different creative disciplines, from painting and drawing, to conceptualising an ad for TV. Understanding the creative process is essential for students to produce their own flashes of brilliance.
The academic subjects in the course are supported by a series of fundamental skills that students acquire through a series of workshops. Students are given insight into the fact that creativity alone does not guarantee success, but that it goes hand in hand with people skills, commitment and the right attitude. So essential skills such as research and presentation expertise, work ethics and professionalism are taught.
